How we run class
Checks, mat rules and class size
What the coaches have completed, and what every class does the same way.
Staff checks and training
- Background checks
- CPR and first aid
- Mandated reporter training
Safety routines
Tapping
A tap, by hand or voice, stops the exercise at once. We teach it on the first night and thank people for using it.
Mat rules
Shoes stay off the mat. Nails are short, jewelry is out and the uniform is clean. Partners are asked to wash before class.
Teens in the room
The teens' class has its own hour with a coach on the mat the whole time. A parent can wait on the bench by the door.
Class size
Classes have up to 14 on the mat, so the coach can see every pair.
Sample details.
Policies
What people ask before they train, in plain words.
Photos of your child
We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.
What to wear and bring
A plain t-shirt and shorts or leggings are fine for the first night, and we lend a gi for it. Wash before class, keep nails short, take off jewelry and tie hair back. Shoes stay off the mat, and we ask everyone to arrive clean and dry.
Watching class
You are welcome to watch from the bench by the door. During promotion nights we ask the room to stay quiet and phones to stay down. A parent of a teen can wait on the bench during the teens' class.
When to stay home
If you have a fever, a stomach bug, a skin rash or anything that spreads from mat to mat, stay home and send us a message. You don't need to give details.
Absences and late arrival
Send a message if you can't make a night, so the coach can plan partners. Arriving late is fine: wait at the edge of the mat until the coach waves you in.
Closures for weather and holidays
We close for the main holidays and, in winter, when the roads are bad. Closures are posted on the booking page, and we text students the same afternoon.
Leaving the program
Memberships run month to month. To stop, tell us in writing at least 30 days ahead; the month in progress is billed as usual. The tuition page says more, and you can ask us how to pause.
Screens and phones
Phones stay on silent and in a bag during class. Please ask the coach before filming, and don't post pictures of other people.
Still have a question?
Send a message, or ask at the door before a class.
