Questions
Questions people ask
How old do you have to be?
Teens ages 14 to 17 train in the Monday teens' class. The Wednesday and Thursday classes are for ages 16 and up, Monday Fundamentals is for ages 18 and up, and the coach moves a teen in when they're ready.
Can I watch a class first?
Yes. Come to the door on a class night, say hello and sit on the bench. A parent of a teen is welcome to wait there during the teens' class.
What do I wear to a first class?
A plain t-shirt and shorts or leggings, with no zippers or pockets. We have gis to borrow for the night, and we'll talk about getting your own when you join.
What is a class like?
We sit quietly for two minutes, bow, warm up and drill one idea with a partner. Light rounds come at the end, and a first-timer can sit them out.
Do I need to be fit or flexible?
No. Come as you are. The warm-up is the same for everyone, and you set your own pace on the mat.
What is the difference between jiu-jitsu and judo?
Judo starts standing, with throws and learning to fall. Jiu-jitsu is mostly on the ground, with holds, escapes and submissions. We teach both, on different nights.
What does tapping mean?
You tap your partner or the mat to say stop, and your partner lets go right away. Everyone taps, from the first night to the black belt.
How do belts work?
Belts mark skills the coach has seen, and a student moves up at their own pace. The belts page lists what each color works on.
How does tuition work, and how do I stop?
What you pay depends on who is training and how many nights a week; the figures are on the enrollment page. Memberships run month to month, and you stop with written notice. The tuition page has the details.
Do you compete?
Competing is optional. Some students go to tournaments, and many never do. Nobody is asked to.
