Belts
Belts follow the mat, not the calendar
A belt is the coach saying the skills are there. Up to four stripes on a belt mark the steps along the way.

How a belt is given
Stripes
A stripe on the belt marks a step within it. A belt can carry up to four before the next color.
Promotion nights
The coach gives belts and stripes at the end of class when the skills are there. It is a quiet moment on the mat, and a short one.
Your own pace
Some students move quickly and some stay a long time in one color. Both are normal, and nobody is compared to the person beside them.
Start at white
Everyone does. Try a class and see where you fit.
